The first full week of action in the NFL, and while most football fans are familiar with the superstars and the teams who are actually contending for a Super Bowl title, every now and then a special player comes along to take the focus off of those more familiar names. After Week 1, I believe in 2012 that player may very well be Washington QB Robert Griffin III. His NFL debut in a word? WOW!
Griffin’s opening day performance at New Orleans even impressed Dallas fans, including me. Trust me, we don’t dole out Redskin compliments very easily, under any circumstances, but in the casr of R G – 3, we have to give respect where it is due. Like many who have seen the Redskins throw away high draft picks on busts over the year, it’s obvious that this QB may have been their greatest player personel achievement in decades. The rookie was 19 – 26 for 320 yards and 2 TDs, plus he ran for 42 yards as well in leading Washington to a stunning 40 – 32 victory over the Saints.
The week’s biggest match-ups saw the Dallas Cowboys defeat the defending world champion New York Giants on opening day, while Peyton Manning resurfaced in Denver with a huge win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles just barely escaped Cleveland with a vicory over the Browns, and San Fransisco is apparently a major player in 2012 after beating the Packers in Green Bay. Huge game tonight in Baltimore as the Ravens welcome the Cincinnati Bengals.
