The Spartans of Norfolk State University, an FCS playoff team last season and still a force after their second straight win on Saturday at Liberty Umiversity, where NSU defeated the Flames 31 – 24. The Spartans return to Norfolk next weekend for a home date with Howard University. In other MEAC action, the Pirates of Hampton University were blown away by cross-the-Bay rival Old Dominion, also an FCS playoff team last season. The Monarchs clobbered Hampton 45 – 7 on Saturday in Norfolk. The Pirates are now 0 – 2.

In the CIAA, the Panthewrs of Virginia Union University made it two straight wins to open the 2012 season with a 31 – 14 victory at Brevard College in North Carolina. The Panthers have a big road game next Saturday at Fayetteville State. Heartbreak in the Land of Troy as Virginia State University fell to West Liberty 14 – 13 in their home opener. This, the week after being shut-out at Norfolk State and the Trojans are off to an 0 – 2 start with a road game at Benedict College Saturday in South Carolina.
