Out of the 46 total first ladies the United States has seen, Michelle Obama serves as the very first African American first lady. When her husband Barack Obama the first African American president in the United States took office, Michelle Obama began an administration all her own. Mrs. Obama has far exceeded her duties as First Lady, almost reinventing the position itself.
Michelle Obama officially assumed office January of 2009 and immediately began advocating for Americans to adopt a new way of life. This new way of life promotes a total exercising of self, in every capacity. From physical exercise, to exercising your imperative right to vote Ms. Obama hopes Americans will get up and become actively involved in their country.
Most notably the First Lady has launched the popular “Let’s Move” campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to raise a healthier generation of kids in America. The campaign was launched February of 2010 and has made great progress, reaching America’s youth through several Disney Channel shows, commercials, and events. In addition, popular music artists like Beyonce’ Knowles have joined her campaign in promoting a healthy active lifestyle.
The First Lady’s campaigns also extend to adults emphasizing an exercise of their own in polling places across the country. “Don’t let frustration keep you from voting,” said Ms. Obama. With yet another crucial election approaching the importance of being involved in the voting process on every level from senate elections, to primaries, to the presidential election is paramount. Listen in on my interview with First Lady Michelle Obama.
As women continue to make history everyday, Michelle Obama serves as a critical role model, setting both lifestyle and political standards for us all. We honor you, Mrs. First Lady Michelle Obama.
